Recommissioning of Thimphu Mini Hydropower Plant 360 kW

The recommissioning of Thimphu Mini Hydropower Plant was inaugurated on February 21, 2018, coinciding with the 38th Birth Anniversary of His Majesty the King. The inauguration was graced by the Hon’ble Prime Minister, Dasho Tshering Tobgay.

The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) carried out the recommissioning works in collaboration with Bhutan Power Corporation Limited at a total cost of Nu.28.70 million. The recommissioning of the power plant was completed in November 2017.

Thimphu Mini Hydropower Plant was commissioned on February 8, 1967 and was the first hydropower plant in country with the generation capacity of 360 kW (4×90). The Central Water Commission (CWC), funded by GoI, carried out the construction of power plant then.

On an average, Thimphu Mini Hydropower Plant generates 1.3 million units of energy annually. The power plant is connected to the grid.
