It was 16th December 2015, a day ahead of 108th National Day Celebration in Paro, BPC Management gathered in Paro to inaugurate the Distribution Transformer (DT) Metering pilot project which was taken up to meter all the DTs in Paro. The Managing Director (Chief Guest for the program) inaugurated the Metering System by switching on a meter connected to the nearest DT.

Through the pilot project, BPC has successfully metered on Low Voltage (LV) side all its 209 DTs including 18 LV Bulk Consumers and 3 Medium Voltage (MV) feeders. These meters now report at regular interval to the central server in Thimphu through the use of Automatic Meter Reading (AMR) technology.

Besides being able to monitor the health of the individual DTs (most important equipment in the Distribution System), the pilot project will help BPC to achieve the following objectives:

  1. Record outages of all the lines and substations for calculating reliability indices.
  1. Record energy flow in the network for calculating energy loss in the distribution system.
  1. Get information on outage of individual transformers as and when it happens so that ESDs concerned can quickly mobilize resources for early restoration of supply.

The Managing Director congratulated DCSD and the team for successful implementation of the project and directed the team to continuously monitor the status of the meters and ensure that BPC is able to achieve the objectives of implementing the project. As per the plan, the information captured and communicated by the meters shall be analyzed at regular interval and based on the success similar projects shall be implemented in the other ESDs.
